How to Calm a Nervous Dog

In accordance with the American Kennel Club, there are three common reasons for anxiety in dogs. First and foremost, disorientation and memory loss come with age. Second, a dread of loud noises, unfamiliar places, enormous or weird items, large groups of people, and, last, a fear of being separated.

Your pup likely experiences one, two, or three of these anxieties. In fact, researchers found that 72.5% of the dogs exhibited anxiety-like behavior. However, the good news is that you can do a few things to help your furry friend feel more relaxed.

Calming a nervous dog begins with understanding what is causing their anxiety and then working to change their perception of that trigger.

One way to do this is by desensitization, which is a slow process of exposure to the trigger in a controlled and safe environment. The goal is to make your pup feel comfortable and secure while around the trigger by using positive reinforcement.

This can be done by using treats, petting, or verbal praise when your dog is around the trigger and behaving calmly. It is essential to take things slowly and not force your dog into any situations they are not comfortable with. If you do, it could make their anxiety worse.

Most importantly, be there for them. Show your dog that you are calm and confident, and they will look to you for guidance. If you are feeling stressed, it will only make them more anxious. Dogs are incredibly intuitive creatures and can sense our emotions, so it is essential to remain calm and collected.

The most important thing to remember when trying to calm a nervous dog is to be patient and never give up. It may take some time, but eventually, your pup will be able to overcome its anxiety and live a happy and healthy life.

If you think your dog may be suffering from anxiety, it is essential to talk to your veterinarian. They will be able to help you come up with a plan to address your dog's specific needs and help them overcome their anxiety.
